Your lawn care efforts are focused on year-round beautification; but did you know that landscaping can be terrifying as well?

While the experts at Executive Lawn Care take pride in our lawn mowing and related landscaping services, we’d like to take some time to settle into the Halloween season with these creepy plant facts. Learn about the plants and flowers that could be creeping around your Lone Star State landscape.

Lantana Camara

The Lantana Camara is a perennial that is native to Mexico, Central America and parts of South America. These plants are commonly found in pastures and forested thickets across the state.

This particular shrub grows small, green berries and dense flower clusters that bloom in a range of colors. The Lantana is a beautiful plant because when the flowers bloom, they do so in a tri-color circle of florets with colors that include:

  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Pink
  • Cream
  • Red
  • Purple

Be forewarned, although this shrub may be visually appealing, its beauty can be a double-edged sword for those curious enough to consume the berries on the plant. The berries of the Lantana Camara are poisonous and have caused fatalities amongst children and livestock that have consumed the plant.

Agave

One easy way to avoid foot traffic and lawn damage is to plant agave plants around your landscape. Yet another lawn perennial, this plant is a succulent that is known for two things:

  1. The source of Tequila
  2. It’s long, sharp leaves

These plants are a Texas staple because they thrive in the sun and can also withstand the cold nature of our winters. It’s a natural beauty in a landscaping plan, but make sure to warn your children and guests because the spines on these plants are sure to draw first blood if not given the space and respect they deserve.

Azaleas

Did you know that the beautiful, lush, Azalea is a plant that can wreak havoc on your body if consumed?  Although this shrub is popular in Texas flower beds, if a person were to consume its petals, they’d be in for a toxic shock. Consumption of this plant can lead to complications that include:

  • Depression
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Prostration
  • Coma
