5 Tips for a Healthy Fall Lawn

Sep 10, 2018Uncategorized

The air is beginning to cool down and fall has officially arrived in Texas. This is the optimal time for you to start focusing on and enjoying your fall lawn. Although spring feels like it is years away, now is when you should begin prepping your lawn for its winter survival.

At Executive Lawn Care, we know how important curb appeal is for Frisco homeowners. So, here are 5 quick and easy tips for keeping a healthy fall lawn this season.

1.  Continue Watering Your Fall Lawn

Even though the initial Texas heat is gone, continued watering while the weather is cooler is something that needs to be done. Even though this time of the year brings occasional rainfall, this isn’t enough to keep your grass hydrated and well-prepared for winter.

We recommend that your lawn receive at least one inch of water per week.

2.  Aerating is Great for Grass Health

Every couple of years, your lawn should have its soil loosened in order to prevent it from being overgrown with thatch. Thatch blocks water and nutrients that your soil needs.

Your lawn maintenance provider can use equipment like a core aerator to prep the lawn for fertilization before winter comes. The aeration process allows your fertilizer to gain easy access to the roots of your lawn.

3.  Bring Your Rake Out of Commission

Fall creates a lush bed of leaves across your lawn. While these leaves may look beautiful, too many leaves will smother your lawn and prevent it from receiving the sunlight and essential water that it needs.

Bring out the rake and make sure that you take care of these leaves more than once this fall season.

4.  Mow at the Height of the Season

Not every season comes with the same mowing standards. During the warmer months, you want to raise the height of your mower in the effort to prevent heat stress. During the fall, however, lower your mower and don’t be afraid to cut your lawn shorter than average.

If you are worried about compromising the beauty of your lawn, consult with your lawn mowing expert about how high or low you should be cutting.

5.  Nitrogen-Rich Fertilizer is Key

Fall is a great time to add an application of fertilizer to prep for winter sustenance. We recommend using a fertilizer that is nitrogen-rich and is a slow-release granular type of product. It is also useful to look for a fertilizer that is high in potassium for help with root growth and cold resistance.
