Fall is Here!

For some, fall is the best season of the year. The kids are back in school, the weather is getting cooler, comfort food is all around and fall sports are in full swing. But what about our yards? As we look around, fall is usually the beginning of the end when it comes to most people’s lawns as far as maintenance and color. Similar to the story of the ant and the grasshopper, if we put a little work into our yards in the fall and winter, we will reap the benefits in the spring and summer. Autumn is one the best times of year to prepare our yards for a lush and beautiful spring and summer. Here are 3 things that you can do in the fall to ensure a yard of envy come springtime.

1. Clear leaves from the lawn: One of the best parts about autumn can also create on our biggest chores. The trees changing color is a beautiful sight..until the leaves start to fall in the yard. It’s essential that we do not let these build up in the yard because they create a “blanket” over the grass which will suffocate it. This will deprive the grass of sunlight, air and water that is needs to remain healthy. If raking the leaves is too much work for bigger yard owners, having a landscaping company take care of the task with a bagging mower will do the trick. Just be sure to dispose of the leaves properly by following your city’s guidelines.

2. Fertilize: Our lawns need nourishment all year long and fall is no different. Autumn is one of the best times of years to fertilize a yard because it gives our grass a chance to grow nice roots that will result in healthy springtime yards. Since the grass grows slower in the fall months, the fertilizer really has a chance to take hold and nourish the yard. We use a special granular and liquid fertilizer to promote root growth, food storage and prepare for winter conditions.

3. Keep weeds under control: It’s completely natural to look the other way when it comes to weeds in our yard during the fall, but this is a prime time to treat for weeds because our yards absorb more nourishment in the fall than in the spring and summer. Also, many homeowner associations will not allow weeds during any season so it’s best to stay on top of it. By “training” a yard in the fall, we can prevent weeds from returning in the spring.

We believe that a yard should be beautiful all year long, but the most popular seasons to show off our lawns are in the spring and summer. To ensure your yard looks amazing come spring time, we recommend that you start maintaining and grooming it in the fall and winter. Please feel free to comment below and share with anyone that you feel this may help. We look forward to helping you have a healthy and happy lawn!
